There are many reasons why it’s important to invest in your clients in building a strong foundation! It keeps them coming back. It provides you with critical information that could make or break their microblading appointment.

Why do we need to know health history?

We’re in an industry that serves a broad range of ages — from teens to seniors — so it’s important to go a little deeper and find out more on their current health. Many factors can disrupt the end result in a microblading service, so when you have this information you can either schedule an appointment at a later time, or make them aware of the potential outcome.

For example, if you have an older adult who has recently had surgery, do they need to take medication before the service? This is information that they would need to run by their doctor, but it’s important that you catch the details.

Also, many clients have other health issues that they’re dealing with, whether it be an autoimmune disease or taking hormones in perimenopause or menopausal women.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which your body essentially attacks itself — causing inflammation in a number of organs and tissues. If a client is in a flare up, it is typically recommended they don’t get microblading as it can result in excessive bruising, bleeding, and possible infection.

Most clients will give you a heads up if they have any medical concerns, but clients often forget due to nerves before the appointment or just getting distracted by the conversation. This is why it’s so important to get into the habit of having clients fill out a form and spending time going over it and asking clarifying questions.  

 

Asking The Need-To-Know Questions

As a beauty professional, there are certain questions that you should include on your client intake form! Everything that provides an insight into their health history and also to ensure a safe service that turns out amazing.  

Good intake forms address the following:

Skincare – Ask questions regarding what skincare products clients are using. Ask specifically if they’re using Retin A, Renova, Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) or glycolic acids. Any of these may make the site more sensitive and should not be used following the service as it could result in altering the pigment and premature exfoliation of the color.

Medications – Ask clients if they’re on any medications and inform them that it may affect the permanent makeup application.

Imaging Procedures – Because most microblading pigments contain oxides (metals) — which are completely natural — it’s important to ask clients if they have any upcoming procedures that require an MRI, because it could affect the scan. As always, have them contact their doctor with any questions.

 

Beyond discussing the above, it’s important to include the following “yes” or “no” questions.

  • Botox?
  • History of MRSA?
  • Diabetes?
  • Hepatitis A,B,C,D, E?
  • Brow or forehead lift?
  • Facelift?
  • Easy bleeding?
  • Alcoholism?
  • Abnormal heart condition?
  • Do you need medication before dental procedures?
  • Chemical peel (recent)?
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding?
  • Oily skin?
  • Cancer?
  • Accutane/other acne medications?
  • Chemo/radiation?
  • Blood thinners?
  • Allergies?
  • Anything we should know that isn’t listed?

 

Clear communication between you and your client is vital to the outcome of their procedure! It helps relieve any of their nerves when you can walk them through any medical concerns or risks before the procedure.

It’s also what builds trust, which in turn strengthens your client base because they have confidence in your abilities so they’re more likely to refer all their friends!

When it comes to getting to know your clients, the more information, the better. When you have a complete picture, it can help you see how to best address their microblading services, for an end result that they will love.
